1. Hopopop — cognitive friction wins
Hopopop uses Android's Accessibility Services to intercept app launches. Try to open a blocked app and you get a math problem, a trivia question, or a cultural quiz before access is granted. No "skip after 10 seconds" loophole.
After 60 days, this was the only blocker still actively running on all three test devices. The cognitive challenge breaks the autopilot loop that makes doom-scrolling so sticky. Day-40 adherence was the highest of any app tested.
2. ScreenZen — pause before you scroll
ScreenZen's approach is softer: it doesn't block, it delays. A 10-second prompt asking "why are you opening this?" appears before the app loads. Research on implementation intentions shows this cuts usage by 20–30% for moderate users.
For heavy users, the prompt quickly becomes invisible friction. Once the habit of tapping past it forms, the behavioral effect fades.
3. AppBlock — the scheduling powerhouse
AppBlock has the most granular scheduling we tested: different rules for work hours, commute, bedtime, and weekends. If your phone problem is context-specific (only bad during work, only bad at night), AppBlock is excellent. The bypass mechanic is a self-set passcode — surprisingly effective because it requires a conscious choice to disable.
4. StayFree — diagnose before you block
StayFree surfaces shocking usage numbers. Seeing "4h 38min on Instagram this week" is a behavioral intervention in itself. The blocking feature is passcode-only and easy to disable in weak moments.
Use StayFree as a diagnostic for one week. Once you know your problem apps, move to Hopopop or AppBlock for the intervention.
5. Freedom — cross-device champion

The Android blocking problem
Unlike iOS, Android has no dedicated Screen Time API. Blockers use one of three mechanisms, each with different strength:
- Accessibility Services: intercepts app launches before the app loads. Most robust. Requires granting accessibility permissions.
- Usage Stats API: polls usage stats every few seconds and kills the foreground app. Creates a brief flash of the app before blocking.
- VPN: blocks network access. Bypassable by switching to mobile data or toggling the VPN off.

Which one should you choose?
- If you've bypassed blockers before: Hopopop. The cognitive challenge creates real cost at the moment of opening.
